Most sleep supplements use one or two ingredients at doses too low to do anything measurable. CLARIA uses six, each at a clinically relevant dose, each targeting a specific biological mechanism behind disrupted sleep. Nothing is in here for marketing purposes. Every compound earns its place.
How they work together
Sleep disruption almost always has three simultaneous causes: elevated evening cortisol that keeps the nervous system on alert, low GABA activity that prevents the brain from quieting down, and an overactive stress response that won't disengage at bedtime. CLARIA addresses all three at once. Ashwagandha and Tart Cherry lower cortisol and support melatonin. L-Theanine, Lemon Balm, and Magnesium Glycinate increase GABA activity from three different angles. B6 as P5P provides the raw material for GABA synthesis itself. The result is a stack where each ingredient amplifies the others — not six separate supplements in one capsule, but one formula designed as a system.
KSM-66® Ashwagandha

Lowers evening cortisol
What it is: Ashwagandha is an adaptogenic root used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. KSM-66 is the most clinically studied full-spectrum extract available, standardised to at least 5% withanolides.
The mechanism: KSM-66 has been shown in multiple double-blind, randomised controlled trials to significantly reduce serum cortisol. It works by modulating the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis — the system that regulates the stress response. By calming HPA reactivity, it allows cortisol to drop naturally in the evening so the body can begin its transition toward sleep.
Why this dose: 300mg of KSM-66 is the dose used in the most cited trials showing cortisol reduction and sleep quality improvements. Lower doses have shown inconsistent results in the literature.
L-Theanine

Quiets the racing mind
What it is: L-Theanine is an amino acid found naturally in green tea leaves. It is one of the few compounds that promotes relaxation without causing sedation — the "calm alertness" quality associated with green tea despite its caffeine content.
The mechanism: L-Theanine increases alpha wave activity in the brain — the same brainwave state present during meditation and the natural transition into sleep. It also increases GABA, serotonin, and dopamine, and reduces the activity of excitatory neurotransmitters that keep the mind active and vigilant.
Why this dose: 200mg is the threshold dose at which alpha wave increases become measurable and clinically significant. Studies using 100mg show minimal effect; 200mg is the established effective dose.
Magnesium Glycinate

Activates the nervous system's off-switch
What it is: Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions. Magnesium Glycinate is magnesium bound to glycine — the form with the highest bioavailability and the least digestive disruption of any magnesium compound.
The mechanism: Magnesium activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the "rest and digest" system) and directly modulates GABA receptors, enhancing their function. It also regulates the NMDA receptor, reducing neural excitability. Glycine, the carrier molecule, has independent sleep-promoting effects — it lowers core body temperature, a key trigger for sleep onset.
Why this form: Magnesium oxide and citrate are commonly used in cheap supplements due to cost. Oxide has approximately 4% absorption. Glycinate absorbs at around 80%. We use glycinate because the only magnesium that works is the magnesium that gets into the bloodstream.
Montmorency Tart Cherry

Natural melatonin support
What it is: Montmorency tart cherry is one of the few natural food sources of melatonin. It also contains a range of phytonutrients including anthocyanins, which have anti-inflammatory effects relevant to sleep quality.
The mechanism: Montmorency cherry provides melatonin precursors (tryptophan and serotonin) and exogenous melatonin at levels that support the body's natural production cycle without the receptor desensitisation associated with synthetic melatonin. Its anti-inflammatory compounds also reduce the inflammatory signalling linked to sleep fragmentation and early morning waking.
Why not synthetic melatonin: Synthetic melatonin floods receptors at doses typically 5–10x higher than the body naturally produces, causing receptor downregulation over time. Tart cherry provides a gentler, more physiologically appropriate signal — supporting your own system rather than overriding it.
Lemon Balm Extract

Extends GABA's calming effect
What it is: Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a traditional nervine herb from the mint family, used for centuries to reduce anxiety and promote sleep. The extract is standardised for rosmarinic acid content.
The mechanism: Lemon balm inhibits GABA transaminase — the enzyme that breaks down GABA. By slowing GABA breakdown, it effectively increases GABA levels in the brain and extends the duration of its calming effect. This mechanism is complementary to L-Theanine (which increases GABA production) and Magnesium (which activates GABA receptors), creating a three-angle GABA support system.
Why this dose: 300mg of standardised lemon balm extract is the dose used in clinical trials showing reduction in anxiety scores and improvements in sleep onset time. Lower doses show inconsistent results.
Vitamin B6 as P5P

The essential cofactor for sleep chemistry
What it is: Pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P) is the active, bioavailable form of Vitamin B6. Unlike the more common pyridoxine form found in most supplements, P5P does not require conversion by the liver and is immediately usable by the body.
The mechanism: B6 is an essential cofactor in the synthesis of serotonin, GABA, and melatonin — the three neurotransmitters most directly involved in sleep regulation. Without adequate B6, the body cannot produce these compounds efficiently regardless of what else is in the stack. B6 deficiency is common in adults under chronic stress. Including it ensures the rest of the formula has the raw material it needs to work.
Why P5P: Pyridoxine (the standard form) must be converted to P5P by the liver before it is active. This conversion is impaired by alcohol, certain medications, and liver stress. P5P bypasses this step entirely.
